Corfu is the most famous island of the archipelago and is the most northerly of the Ionian Islands and then the closest to Italy. Its southern coast is about 10 km from mainland Greece, while the northern one is just 2 km from Albania. Throughout history Corfu was Byzantine, Genoese, Venetian, Angevin, Turkish, French and English. The capital, which has the same name as the island is characterized by narrow streets reminiscent of the Genoese alleys, squares are similar to the Venetian and the cafes atmosphere is almost Parisian. The beaches are beautiful and the sea is crystal clear. Numerous bays are enhanced by a rich vegetation that reaches the sea.
